WD2001: Unable to Open Main Merge Document When the Data Source Has Been Replaced with a Word Document (272828)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q272828

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a data merge main document to which you have attached a Word document as the data source, you receive an alert similar to the following:
MyFileName is a data merge main document. Word cannot find its data source, MyDataFile.
If you click Find File in the alert box, the alert reappears. If you click Cancel instead, you receive the following error message:
There is not enough memory or disk space to complete the operation.

CAUSE

This occurs if you first attach either a FileMaker Pro database or an Office Address Book as the data source, and then save and close the main document. If you subsequently replace the data source with a Word document, and then save and close the main merge document, you are unable to open it again.

Word tries to read the Word data source as a FileMaker Pro or an Office Address Book file. When it fails to find such a document, it display the alert message.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac.
