The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q272819

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac, when you change the default Save Word files as from Word Document to something else, such as Rich Text Format, or Word 4.0, and then you save your document, the document is saved as a Word Document after all, instead of in the format you selected.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the Office Assistant is removed from the Office folder or turned off.

When the Office Assistant is removed from the Office folder or turned off, Word does not warn you before saving in the Word 2001 default file format. This eliminates any possible data loss, but can be confusing if you share the current document with older versions of Word.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file. To do so, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

WORKAROUND

To avoid this issue, do one of the following:
  • Leave the Office Assistant turned on.

    -or-
  • Leave the Office Assistant hidden.

    -or-
  • Remember to click Save As on the File menu to ensure that you are using the file format you expect.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac Service Release 1.
