WD2001: Document Edited Simultaneously in Two Versions of Word is Renamed "Word Work File D" (272811)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q272811 SYMPTOMS
When you open a document in Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac, you are able to open the same document using Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition (or Microsoft Word 6 Macintosh Edition), without first closing the document in Word 2001. When you do this, you do not receive a message warning you that the document is being used by another user. You are not asked if you want to make a copy.
If you edit a document simultaneously in two versions of Word, and you then save the document in Word 2001, Word renames the document "Word Work File D."
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, avoid opening one document simultaneously in more than one version of Word. If you want to edit a Word 2001 document using Word 98 or Word 6, first close the document in Word 2001, and then open the document in Word 98 or Word 6.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 for Mac.
