SYMPTOMS

The multiplication symbol (an extended character of a font) is incorrectly pasted as the infinity symbol when you copy from a Macintosh text editor, such as SimpleText, into a Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition document.

WORKAROUND

To insert symbols not found on the keyboard into a document, follow these steps:
  1. In Word, open an existing document or create a new document.
  2. Click where you want to insert the character.
  3. On the Insert menu, click Symbol. On the Symbols tab, select Symbol in the Font list box.
  4. Double-click the character that you want to insert into the document.
