WD2001: You Cannot Align Margins of Cells or Columns As Expected (272800)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q272800

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to adjust the width of selected cells in a Microsoft Word table by dragging the margin to align with that of a cell above or below it, you are unable to align the margin exactly with the margin of the other cell.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because, by default, the margins of cells snap to the nearest gridline, and some margins may not coincide with the gridline when a table is inserted with specific column widths.

RESOLUTION

Hold down the OPTION key to temporarily override the snap-to-gridline feature.

When you hold down the OPTION key, the exact width of each column is displayed on the Ruler.
