PPT2001: Error Message: PowerPoint Can't Save the Embedded Object (272784)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2001 for Macintosh

This article was previously published under Q272784

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to save a presentation, Microsoft PowerPoint stops responding, or you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
PowerPoint can't save the embedded object.

CAUSE

This error message may occur when the presentation file contains one or more inserted objects (pictures, sounds, movie clips, and so on), and at least one of the inserted objects is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, please download and install the Microsoft Office 2001 Service Release 1 file from the following Microsoft Web site: Please note that installing this upgrade may repair the file that displays the error message; if it does not, please follow the steps in the "Temporary Workaround" section of this article.

Temporary Workaround

To temporarily work around this problem, locate the objects that are corrupted and remove them from your presentation. To do this, copy all the good parts of your presentation to a new file, and then save that file. In the process, you can find the damaged objects and replace them when you are finished. To create a new file and find the corrupted objects, follow these steps:
  1. Open the presentation, if it is not already open, and then click Slide Sorter on the View menu.
  2. Click New Presentation on the File menu, and then click Slide Sorter on the View menu.
  3. Click Arrange All on the Window menu.
  4. Click Save on the File menu, give the new presentation a name, and then click Save.
  5. Drag a slide from the old presentation to the new presentation, and then click Save on the File menu.
  6. Repeat the previous step until you get the error message.

When you get the error message, the last slide moved may have a corrupted object.
  7. Double-click the last slide moved.
  8. Select an object on this slide, press the DELETE key to delete the object, and then click Save on the File menu.
  9. Repeat the previous step until the error message no longer appears. When you stop getting the error message, the last object you removed was corrupted.

If you removed more than one object from this slide, you must verify that the last object was the only corrupted object.
  10. Click Slide Sorter on the View menu, and then click Arrange All on the Window menu.
  11. Select the modified slide (the slide you removed objects from) in the new presentation and press the DELETE key to delete it.
  12. Drag the original slide from the old presentation to the new presentation, and then double-click the slide that contains the corrupted object in the new presentation.
  13. Delete the corrupted object, and then click Save on the File menu.

If the new presentation can be saved without error, you have successfully located the only corrupted object on that slide. If there is an error message, other objects on that slide may be corrupted. Repeat step 8 to locate the remaining corrupted items in this slide.
  14. Drag the rest of the slides one at a time from the old presentation to the new presentation and save the new presentation file.

STATUS
