You can configure Outlook in Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode to connect to a mail server through either a LAN or a Dial-Up Networking connection without changing your settings before you connect.

This article assumes that you have a valid and working Dial-Up Networking connection to your mail servers.

To connect to a mail server through either a LAN or a Dial-Up Networking connection:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.
  2. On the Mail tab, click the appropriate e-mail account, and then click Properties.
  3. On the Connection tab, click Connect using my local area network (LAN).
  4. Click to select the Connect via modem if the LAN is not available check box.
  5. In the Modem section, click the appropriate Dial-Up Networking connection.
  6. Click OK, click Close, and then click Exit and Log Off on the File menu.
When you start Outlook again, the program attempts to send and receive mail by using the available connection.
