Microsoft Office 2001 programs allow you to edit and view documents in the languages listed in the "More Information" section of this article, if the appropriate Apple Language Kit is installed.

You can enable additional functionality in the specific Office program if that Office program is registered to the specific language in the Language Register utility.

NOTE: Language-specific features are also available if you use the specific language version of the Macintosh OS.

NOTE: The ability to use the Japanese language is only available in the English (all) and Japanese versions of Office.

Follow these steps to use the international language features in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac:
  1. Install the appropriate Apple Language Kit.

    NOTE: Many Language Kits are included with Macintosh OS 9.0 (English version) or later and can be installed by using a custom installation. For more information about adding or removing system software components, search on the topic "add remove components" in Mac Help, which is available on the Help menu in Finder, or contact Apple.

    If you are using an earlier version of the Macintosh OS, you must purchase individual Apple Language Kits.
  2. Open the Utilities folder, which is located on your computer's hard disk drive. Double-click the Language Register utility.
  3. On the pop-up list next to Language, click the language that you want to use in an Office 2001 program, and then click Register.
  4. In the Select a file to register dialog box, select the Office program that you want to use with the selected language, and then click Register.
  5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each program that you want to register with the selected language. Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each language that you want to use with an Office 2001 program.
  6. Install the International Proofing Tools by using the Value Pack installer on your Microsoft Office 2001 CD. For more information about installing Value Pack components, please refer to the Guide to the Value Pack file in the Value Pack folder on your CD.
Microsoft offers support for the U.S. version of Office 2001 when your computer is running any of the following international versions of the Mac OS, or an English version of the OS with any of the following Language Kits installed:
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • English (all)
  • French (all)
  • German
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Spanish
  • Swedish
The language-specific features differ, depending on the language and the program. Some features are common to all languages, such as the spelling checker in all programs, looking up foreign words in the thesaurus in Word or PowerPoint, creating a custom dictionary in a selected language, and choosing different date formats as used in other languages or cultures.
