1 Installing Microsoft Word 2001
1.1 Minimum System Requirements for Microsoft Word 2001
To use Microsoft Word 2001, your computer must meet the following minimum requirements:
Processor: PowerPC, Mac OS compatible (clock speed of at least 120 MHz recommended)
Operating System: Mac OS 8.1 or later (System 8.5 or later recommended)
Memory: 32MB of RAM with at least 1MB of Virtual Memory for systems prior to 9.0
48MB of RAM with at least 1MB of Virtual Memory for systems 9.0 and later
Available Hard Disk Space: 160 MB. This figure indicates a default
installation of Microsoft Office; your hard-disk usage will vary depending
on the amount of data you store in Microsoft Office and the options you
choose to install. Choices made during a custom installation may require
more or less hard disk space.
Disk Drives: CD-ROM drive or a connection to a local area network if
you are installing Microsoft Word 2001 from a network.
Monitor: Monitor that can display 256 grays or 256 colors and
resolutions of 640x480 or higher (Color monitor that can display thousands
or millions of colors and resolutions of 800x600 or higher recommended)
To use all of the features available in Microsoft Word 2001, it is
recommended that you have the following additional items and services:
Modem: 14.4 Kbps or higher
Internet access through an Internet service provider (ISP) or a network
1.2 Files Installed by Microsoft Word 2001
In addition to the files installed in the Microsoft Office 2001 folder, the
files listed below are installed in the following locations on your hard
disk when you install Microsoft Word 2001:
In the System Folder:Extensions folder:
Microsoft Clipboard Library
Microsoft Component Library
Microsoft Internet Library
Microsoft OLE Automation
Microsoft OLE Library
Microsoft Preference Panels
Microsoft Structured Storage
Type Libraries folder
In the System Folder:Fonts folder:
Several font suitcases
In the System Folder:Preferences folder:
Microsoft folder
If you install all Office programs, including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint,
and Entourage, other items may also be installed. For more details,
consult the documentation for each Microsoft Office program that you have installed.
2 Microsoft Word Help
The "Get Help for Visual Basic for Applications" topic in the Microsoft
Word Help file incorrectly states the name of the Value Pack component for
installing the Visual Basic for Applications Help file. To install
programming Help from the Value Pack, click the arrow next to the
Programmability check box, and then select the VBA Help check box.
The "Ways to get assistance while you work" topic incorrectly states that
you can click the Index button in the Help window to search for specific
words or phrases. You can only search for keywords by alphabetical order
when you click the Index button.
The "Image control" topic in the Microsoft Word VBA Help file incorrectly
lists several file formats that can be used. The Image control only supports the PICT file format.
3 Microsoft Word 2001 Memory Recommendations
The following is a list of symptoms that may occur if there is not enough
memory available in Word. If you are receiving any of these symptoms, you
can increase the memory requirements for Word by doing the following:
1. Quit Word.
2. From the desktop, double-click the hard disk icon.
3. Double-click the folder you installed Office 2001 in, usually
Microsoft Office 2001.
4. Click the Microsoft Word icon.
5. On the File Menu, point to Get info, and then click Memory .
6. Under Memory Requirements, increase the value in the
Preferred Size box by the amount listed below for the symptom
you are experiencing.
3.1 Documents containing Asian Fonts
When you open or create a document in Microsoft Word that contains
Asian fonts, you may receive a message indicating that there is not
enough memory to display the requested font. This message appears
because of the size of most Asian fonts.
SOLUTION: Increase the memory requirements for Word by 1000K.
NOTE: The amount of memory required to avoid this message will
increase if you use multiple Far East fonts in a document.
3.2 Checking Grammar As You Type
If the Check Grammar As You Type check box is selected on the
Spelling & Grammar tab in the Preferences dialog box (Edit menu),
performance may be sub-optimal.
SOLUTION: Increase the performance of this feature by increasing
the memory requirements for Word by 1000K.
3.3 Running Word 2001 Wizards
When you use a wizard to create a document, you may receive a
low-memory message or some graphics may appear as red X's.
SOLUTION: Increase the memory requirements for Word by 1000K.
NOTE: Using more than one wizard may require additional memory.
3.4 When using Visual Basic for Applications
When using the Visual Basic Editor, you may receive a low-memory
message.
SOLUTION: Increase the memory requirements for Word by 1000K.
3.5 Documents Containing Large Graphics
Creating or working with documents that contain large graphics may
generate a low-memory message, or some graphics may appear as
red X's.
SOLUTION: Increase the memory requirements for Word by 1000K.
NOTE: If you have large or complex documents, and increasing the
memory requirements for Word does not address the symptoms
described above, continue increasing the memory until the symptoms
disappear.
4 Microsoft Word 2001 Known Issues
4.1 Default Save Formats Are Not Retained with Assistant Turned Off
When the Office Assistant is removed from the Office folder or turned off,
Word will not warn you before saving in Word 2001's default file format.
This will eliminate any possible data loss, but can be confusing if you
share the current document with older versions of Word. To avoid this,
please leave the assistant on or hidden, or remember to choose Save As from
the File menu to ensure that you are using the file format you expect.
4.2 Suffix Dropped from Contact when Added to the Office Address Book from within Word 2001
When you add a Contact containing a Suffix to the Office Address Book from
within Word, the Suffix will be lost. You can go the to Address Book and
manually add the Suffix. Prefixes are also effected.
4.3 Word 2001 No Longer Allows the User to Toggle Keypad Navigation via the NumLock Key
To conform to Mac OS USB Keyboard Standards, Word 2001 removed the ability
to toggle KeyPad functionality with the NumLock key.
4.4 Office 2001 for Mac is Incompatible with Connectix RAM Doubler versions 9.0 and Earlier
Using Office 2001 with RAM Doubler can cause failure and data loss. For
updates to RAM Doubler, go to <http://www.connectix.com/>.
