Unable to Format or Eject Hot-Swappable Removable Media (272398)

When a non-administrator user tries to eject or format hot-swappable removable media that was connected to the computer after the user logged on, the user may be unable to do so. When the user tries to eject the media, the following error message may be generated:
An error was encountered trying to unmount 'Removable Disk(?:)'.
When the user tries to format the media, the following error message may be generated:
You do not have sufficient rights to perform this operation.
CAUSE
This problem can occur after an administrator applies the "Allowed to eject removable NTFS media" policy on the computer to give administrators and interactive users the ability to eject and format removable media. Permissions to eject and format removable media are applied during the logon process. If the removable media is plugged in to the computer after the user logs on, the user receives read and write permissions, but does not receive permissions to eject or format removable media.
RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, log off and then log on again while the removable media is plugged in to the computer.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
