  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q272378

SYMPTOMS

An image that is created with Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) for both single and multiple-processor computers may not work and you may receive an error message that Kernel32.dll is unsigned.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because your computer checks Mp2up.cat to determine if the files are signed correctly. An updated version of this file is not included in SP1. The kernel files, however, are updated.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

The English-language version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
   Date Time Size File name
   -----------------------------------
   12/20/2000 12:36 9,909 Mp2up.cat

To use this hotfix:
  1. Run the hotfix.exe /x: /u command to expand the hotfix contents to a folder.
  2. Copy the Mp2up.cat file to \\Server\Share\I386\Uniproc and overwrite the Mp2up.cat file that is currently in the Uniproc folder.
  3. Perform the steps that are required to create the Sysprep image on the multiple-processor computer.
  4. When you copy the Uniproc folder to the Sysprep folder on the local computer, you already have the fixed Mp2up.cat file.
  5. Image the computer and restore the image on any single or multiple-processor computer with the same processor type.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
