SUMMARY

Windows 2000 has two Internet Connector license types that are used for different functions and are installed in different ways.

The Windows 2000 Server Internet Connector license is used to allow Web users to be authenticated by a Web server without having to purchase individual licenses for every user.

Windows 2000 Server Internet Connector License

This license allows for an unlimited number of authenticated Internet connections. This license type does not contain Terminal Services client access licenses.

Windows 2000 Terminal Services Internet Connector License

Allows 200 concurrent users to connect anonymously to a Terminal Services server over the Internet. Available only in the Select Volume Software licensing program.

Which Internet Connector License Pack to Purchase

The two Windows 2000 Internet Connector license packs each serve a different purpose. The correct pack should be chosen based on your connection requirements.

If you want clients to be able to connect to a Web site and have authenticated connections over the Internet, you need the Windows 2000 Server Internet Connector license for unlimited connections. If you need up to 200 concurrent non-employees to connect anonymously to a Windows 2000 Terminal Services server, you need the Windows 2000 Terminal Services Internet Connector license.

Windows 2000 Server Internet Connector License

The Windows 2000 Server Internet Connector license is implemented in the Microsoft Internet Information Server 5.0 program by changing it from Anonymous connections to Authenticated connections and adding the Windows 2000 Internet Connector licensing.

Windows 2000 Terminal Services Internet Connector License

Internet Connector licenses are tracked on a Windows 2000-based Terminal Services Licensing server and installed instead of Terminal Services Client Access Licenses. Then you can use the Terminal Services Configuration tool on the Terminal Services server to modify the server settings for the Internet Connector license from Disable to Enable. If a Terminal Services Internet Connector license is installed on the License server, the Terminal Services server uses it, otherwise it remains disabled and in a Terminal Services Client Access License configuration. NOTE: Once in Internet Connector mode, all connections to that Terminal Services server are automatically logged on as the local account TSInternetUser. This cannot be overridden unless the Internet Connector licensing is disabled. A side effect of this is that the Terminal Services server that is using a Terminal Services Internet Connector license does not allow administrators to connect and remotely perform administrative tasks on the server. This is because the administrators connection is connected as TSInternetUser like every other connection with the basic associated user rights.
