SYMPTOMS

The Active Directory Migration Tool (ADMT) performs a migration of objects from Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based or Windows 2000-based domains to a Windows 2000 Active Directory Native-mode domain. You can use the ADMT to migrate users, groups, and computers. When you perform a migration, the following error message may occur:
Failed to move object object name, hr=800720e4. The naming context could not be found.
This sample error would appear in the ADMT reports as something like this:

CAUSE

This problem can occur if the destination's Domain Name System (DNS) domain name contains uppercase letters. For example, the sample domain name EXAMPLE.com (which in LDAP form is "DC=EXAMPLE,DC=com") would cause this problem.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest version of the ADMT from the following Microsoft Web site:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

To work around this problem, do not use uppercase letters in the Active Directory domain name.
