MORE INFORMATION
Problems that you may encounter when you attempt to install
any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article typically have one
or more of the following causes:
- The installation of DCOM was not successfully
completed.
- The installation of MDAC was not successfully
completed.
- The installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer was not
successfully completed.
NOTE: When you install the programs listed at the beginning of this
article, the latest Service Packs for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 must be
installed. Both DCOM and MDAC are components of the Windows NT 4.0 and Windows
2000 operating system, and must be updated with the Service Packs.

To resolve problems that may occur when you install
the programs listed at the beginning of this article, use the following methods
in the order in which they are presented.
Uninstall the Program
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the program that you want to uninstall, and then click
Add/Remove.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to uninstall the
program.
- Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys
Download and run the Picture It! Publishing 2001 Utility to
Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys appropriate to your version of
Windows.
IMPORTANT: If you installed Picture It! Publishing that ships in the
Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, perform the
following steps to prevent a licensing agreement error message:
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Click to expand the Program Files folder.
- Click to expand the WorksBkUp folder.
- Click to select the Works Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- Click to expand the Common Files folder.
- Click to select the Microsoft Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
- Click Yes to All to overwrite existing files and folders.
- Close Windows Explorer.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
End Processes to Free System Resources
To end processes in Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000, follow these
steps:
- Right-click the taskbar, and then click Task
Manager.
- Click the Processes tab.
- Click a process under Image Name, and then click End Process.
NOTE: Do not end the following processes:
System Idle Process
System
smss.exe
winlogon.exe
csrss.exe
services.exe
isass.exe
taskmgr.exe
regsvc.exe
mstask.exe
explorer.exe
- On the File menu, click Exit Task Manager.
NOTE: Any process that you end is automatically restarted when you
restart the computer.
Install Microsoft Internet Explorer
To install Internet Explorer 5.5:
- Insert the installation CD-ROM for the program that you
want to install into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT
key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting
automatically.
- Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- Right-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive icon, and then
click Explore.
- Double-click the Pip folder.
- Double-click the Redist folder.
- Double-click the Ie5 folder.
- Double-click the Ie5Setup.exe file.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install Internet
Explorer 5.5.
NOTE: If the computer restarts after you install Internet Explorer
5.5, repeat the steps in the "End Processes to Free System" method before you
reinstall the program.
Reinstall the Program
Insert the installation CD-ROM for the program that you want to
install into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then follow the instructions on
the screen to reinstall the program.
IMPORTANT: If you installed Picture It! Publishing that ships in the
Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, perform the
following steps to prevent a licensing agreement error message:
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Expand the Program Files folder.
- Expand the WorksBkUp folder.
- Click to select the Works Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- Expand the Common Files folder.
- Select the Microsoft Shared folder.
