Play Count in Media Player 7 and 7.1 Does Not Sort in Numerical Order Properly (272021)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 7
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1
This article was previously published under Q272021 SYMPTOMS
When you sort files by play count in Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1, the files are not accurately sorted in numerical order.
CAUSE
This problem occurs because the play count sorts by alpha-numerical order instead of numerical order. Alpha-numeric order does not order numbers correctly, instead it sorts by the first digit. For example, when you sort 1-15 in alpha-numeric order, 1-15 is ordered like this:
1, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 2, 3 , 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
To sort correctly in alpha-numeric order, digits 1-9 must be preceded by a 0. For example, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
