Unnecessary DNS Query for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.<WorkgroupName> (272020)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP1
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP1
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP1
This article was previously published under Q272020 SYMPTOMS
If your computer is connected to a network, but it is not part of a domain, your computer issues a DNS query for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.WorkgroupName when you use Windows Explorer to set access rights for a shared folder. When you use a demand-dial line to connect to the network, this DNS query may incur unnecessary expense.
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:
Date Time Version Size File name
--------------------------------------------------------
5/31/2001 03:31p 5.0.2195.3649 78,096 Aclui.dll
5/31/2001 03:31p 5.0.2195.3649 207,632 Objsel.dll
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use Subinacl.exe to set permissions on the shared folder. When you use Subinacl.exe to set permissions on the shared folder, the DNS query does not occur. Subinacl.exe is included with the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.
If you are using a forwarder, an unwanted DNS query is sent to the forwarder. To avoid this unnecessary traffic, create a "dummy" DNS zone with the name _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.WorkgroupName (where WorkgroupName is the actual name of your workgroup).
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
