How to Determine If Your Modem Uses WDM Drivers

To determine if your modem uses WDM drivers:
  1. On the toolbar click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Double-click the Modem branch to expand it.
  4. Click your modem, and then click Properties.
  5. Click the Driver tab, and then click Driver File Details.
  6. If a .sys file is included in this list of drivers, you have a WDM modem.
NOTE: Some modems, like the S3/Diamond SupraExpress 56e USB, use .vxd files instead of .sys. In those cases the modem drivers are interfacing between the traditional drivers and the WDM drivers. In order to verify if this is case and the modem is indeed using the WDM architecture, follow these steps:
  1. On the toolbar click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information (Msinfo32).
  2. Click to expand Components, and then select Modem.
  3. Locate WDM_MODEM\....\WDMMDMn. (n=[0-9]). If this modem is present then you are using a WDM modem.

What Is a WDM Driver

This is a hardware device driver that is binary compatible between Microsoft Windows 95/Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows NT. It defines a device-driver architecture that provides a common set of input/output services that can be understood by both operating systems.
