SYMPTOMS

If you install the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) component in Windows 2000 and choose a language other than English, installing Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1) causes some menu items in Windows Explorer and Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 to revert to English.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Registry Changes

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, three registry values must be added or modified. The hotfix package described in this article makes these changes automatically and registers the fact that the hotfix has been applied. No operating system files need be replaced to resolve this problem.

Three REG_SZ values are added or modified under the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\International

The added or modified values are:

rundll32.exe = 5.00.2919.6300-5.00.3299.9999

iexplore.exe = 5.00.2919.6300-5.00.3299.9999

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows 2000. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

This fix addresses only text strings in Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer that were localized by MUI before you installed SP1. Text strings that were in English before applying SP1 will not be localized by applying this fix. Also, this fix does not affect other programs that might have been affected by Windows 2000 SP1.
