To resolve problems that may occur when you install the
programs listed at the beginning of this article, use the following methods in
the order in which they are presented.
Uninstall the Program
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- On the Install/Uninstall tab, click the program that you want to uninstall, and then click
Add/Remove.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to uninstall the
program.
- Click OK, and then close Control Panel.
Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys
Download and run the Picture It! Publishing 2001 Utility to
Remove Program Folders and Registry Keys appropriate to your version of
Windows.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help to prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
IMPORTANT: If you installed Picture It! Publishing that ships in the
Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, perform the
following steps to prevent a licensing agreement error message:
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Click to expand the Program Files folder.
- Click to expand the WorksBkUp folder.
- Click to select the Works Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- Click to expand the Common Files folder.
- Click to select the Microsoft Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
- Click Yes to All to overwrite existing files and folders.
- Close Windows Explorer.
Clean Boot the Computer
To clean boot the computer, use the appropriate method for your
version of Microsoft Windows.
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Microsoft Windows 98
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process Config.sys File
- Process Autoexec.bat File
- Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
- Process Win.ini File
- Load Startup Group Items
- Click OK. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, click
Normal Startup on the
General tab in System Configuration Utility.
Microsoft Windows 95
- Restart the computer. When you see the "Starting Windows
95" message, press the F8 key, and then select Command Prompt
Only from the Startup menu.
- At the command prompt, type win, and
then press ENTER. Press and hold down the SHIFT key until the Windows startup
sequence is complete.
- Disable any anti-virus or disk tool programs that are
installed on the computer.

program. - Quit all running programs except Explorer and Systray. To
do this, press CTRL+ALT+DELETE, click the program that you want to quit, and
then click End Task.
If you receive a message stating that the program is
busy or not responding, click End Task again.
Repeat this step to quit all programs except
Explorer and Systray.

NOTE: To restore your original Startup options, restart the computer
normally, and then enable any anti-virus or disk tool programs installed on the
computer. For information about how to enable these programs, see the printed

Download and Install the Windows Libraries Update
To download the Windows Libraries Update (Speu.exe):
NOTE: If you are running Windows Millennium Edition (ME), skip to the
"Reinstall the Program" section.
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- In the Search using box, click Keyword
Search.
- In the Operating System box, click the version of Microsoft Windows that you are
using.
- In the Keywords box, type microsoft libraries update, and
then click Find It!
- In the list of found download files, click the Microsoft
Libraries Update link.
- On the Microsoft Libraries Update page, click Next.
- On the Microsoft Libraries Update: License Agreement page,
click Next.
- Click Save this program to disk, and then
click OK.
- In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
To install the Windows Library Update:
- Start your computer in Safe Mode.
- Double-click the Speu.exe file on the Windows desktop.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install the
Windows Libraries Update.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Download and Install the DCOM 98 Update
NOTE: If you are using a Windows Millennium Edition-based computer,
proceed to the next troubleshooting method.
To download and install
the DCOM update, use the appropriate method for your version of Microsoft
Windows.
Microsoft Windows 98
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- In the Search using box, click Keyword
Search.
- In the Operating System box, click Windows
98.
- In the Keywords box, type dcom, and then click Find It!
- In the list of found files, click the DCOM98 for
Windows 98 link.
- Under Download Now, click the DCOM98 for Windows 98
link.
- Click Save this program to disk, and then
click OK.
- In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
- Start your computer in Safe Mode.
- Double-click the DCOM98 for Windows 98 icon on the desktop.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install DCOM98 for
Windows 98.
Microsoft Windows 95
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- In the Search using box, click Keyword
Search.
- In the Operating System box, click Windows
95.
- In the Keywords box, type dcom, and then click Find It!
- In the list of found files, click the DCOM95 for
Windows 95 link.
- Under Download Now, click the DCOM95 for Windows 95
link.
- Click Save this program to disk, and then
click OK.
- In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
- Start your computer in Safe Mode.
- Double-click the DCOM95 for Windows 95 icon on the desktop.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install DCOM95 for
Windows 95.
Download and install the MDAC 2.5 Update
To download the MDAC 2.5 update (Mdac_Typ.exe):
- Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
- In the Search using box, click Keyword
Search.
- In the Operating System box, click the version of Microsoft Windows that you are
using.
- In the Keywords box, type mdac, and then click Find It!
- In the list of found files, click the Microsoft Data
Access Components link.
- Under Download Now, click the MDAC_TYP.EXE - 7,857 Kb
link.
- Click Save this program to disk, and then
click OK.
- In the Save in box, click Desktop, and then click Save.
To install the MDAC 2.5 update:
- Start your computer in Safe Mode.
- Double click the Mdac_typ.exe file on the Windows desktop.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install the MDAC
2.5 update.
- When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Yes.

Install Microsoft Internet Explorer
To install Internet Explorer 5.5:
- Insert the installation CD-ROM for the program that you
want to install into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT
key when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Setup from starting
automatically.
- Double click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- Right-click the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive icon, and then
click Explore.
- Double-click the Pip folder.
- Double-click the Redist folder.
- Double-click the Ie5 folder.
- Double-click the Ie5Setup.exe file.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to install Internet
Explorer 5.5.
Reinstall the Program
Insert the installation CD-ROM for the program that you want to
install into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then follow the instructions on
the screen to reinstall the program.
IMPORTANT: If you installed Picture It! Publishing that ships in the
Microsoft Works Suite 2000 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001 package, perform the
following steps to prevent a licensing agreement error message:
- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- Expand the Program Files folder.
- Expand the WorksBkUp folder.
- Click to select the Works Shared folder.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
