SYMPTOMS

When you start one of the programs that are listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message:
Your display has less than 256 colors. Please change the number of colors, and then try running the program again.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Windows color palette setting is set to 16 colors.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, increase the Windows color palette setting to 256 colors:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Display.
  3. Click the Settings tab.
  4. In the Color Palette or Colors box, click 256 Colors.
  5. Click OK.

    If you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.
  6. Close Control Panel.
