XCON: Server Not Set as Routing Group Master After Upgrading First Exchange 2000 Server in a Pure Exchange Server 5.5 Routing Group (271710)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q271710

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade the first Exchange 2000 Server computer in a pure Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5 routing group, the newly upgraded server may not automatically be set as the routing group master. If this is the case, you cannot send any mail from the upgraded Exchange 2000 server to any other servers.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the server is in a routing group with no designated master. The routing engine is unable to determine the Routing Group Connector because there is no master to provide this information.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually set the newly upgraded Exchange 2000 server as the routing group master:
  1. Open Exchange System Manager; click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Locate and click to expand the appropriate administrative group.
  3. Click to expand the applicable routing group.
  4. Click Members, and then click the newly upgraded Exchange 2000 server in the right pane.
  5. If the newly upgraded Exchange 2000 server is not set as master, right-click the newly upgraded Exchange 2000 server, and then click Set as Master in the shortcut menu. After this information replicates, all mail should flow properly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.
