XADM: Exchange 2000 Server Objects Appear in Windows NT Backup Program (271658)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server
- Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
This article was previously published under Q271658 SYMPTOMS When you run the Windows NT Backup program on an Exchange
Server 5.5 computer in an organization that also contains Exchange 2000 Server
computers, the directory and private information store may appear as objects
that you can select under the Exchange 2000 Server computers. This behavior
occurs even when these objects do not actually exist on the Exchange 2000
Server computer. In addition, if you attempt to select one of these objects
under an Exchange 2000 Server computer, and then create a backup, the backup
operation does not finish successfully. WORKAROUND To back up an Exchange 2000 Server computer, run the Backup
program from an Exchange 2000 Server computer instead of running it from an
Exchange Server 5.5 computer.

XADM: How to Back Up and Restore an Exchange 2000 Server Computer by Using the Windows Backup Program
To prevent the backup operation from failing when
you run the Windows NT Backup program on an Exchange Server 5.5 computer, do
not attempt to select objects that appear under Exchange 2000 Server computers
in the same organization. STATUSMicrosoft has
confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange Server version 5.5.
MORE INFORMATION On an Exchange 2000 Server computer, directory information
is stored in Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory, rather than being
maintained by Exchange 2000 Server. As a result, the directory service does not
exist on the server and directory information is protected by backing up Active
Directory, not by backing up an Exchange-specific object such as the directory.
