HMI ASP Error Because of Cpshost Access Violation (271585)

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Commercial Internet System (MCIS) 2.5 HTML Mail Interface (HMI) may not work and may generate Active Server Pages (ASP) error messages. Microsoft Internet Explorer clients that are running HMI WebMail may generate the following error message:
error 'ASP 0115'
Unexpected error
/email/Messages.asp
A trappable error occurred in an external object. The script cannot continue running.
The MCIS 2.5 HMI server may log the following error messages in the Application event log:
Asp 5 error; Unexpected error
Intermittent access violations may occur and may impact performance over time.

CAUSE

This problem can occur if an access violation occurs in CPSHost, which is the posting acceptor during mail file attachment. This access violation is logged in DrWtsn32 logs and Exception Monitor Debug logs.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem. This fix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, Microsoft recommends that you wait for the next Microsoft Site Server service pack that contains this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Site Server 3.0.
