ELL French & Spanish Error Message: Unable to Find the CD-ROM (271454)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to start the Microsoft Encarta Language Learning programs listed at the beginning of this article, you may receive the following error message
Unable to find the CD-ROM of Encarta language that was used at the time of installation. Please insert the corresponding installation disc in the CD-ROM drive.
where language represents the language of the Encarta Language Learning program that you are attempting to run.

If you insert the Encarta Language Learning Installation & Resources CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, Setup may start automatically although the Encarta Language Learning program is already installed on the computer.

If you attempt to reinstall the Encarta Language Learning program without first uninstalling the program, you may receive the following error message:
Version Already Installed

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you remove Microsoft Encarta Reference Suite 2001 from your computer after you install the Encarta Language Learning program.

When you uninstall Encarta Reference Suite 2001, you remove shared files that the Encarta Language Learning program needs to run.

NOTE: This issue only occurs when you uninstall Encarta Reference Suite 2001.

If you uninstall the component products of Encarta Reference Suite 2001 or a stand-alone Encarta 2001 product, this issue does not occur.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall and then reinstall the Encarta Language Learning program.

NOTE: Uninstalling the Encarta Language Learning program deletes all saved user information such as saved scores.

You can back up this information before you uninstall the program and then restore the information into the Encarta Language Learning program after you reinstall the program. To uninstall and reinstall the Encarta Language Learning software:
  1. Quit all programs that are running on your computer.
  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  4. Click Encarta Language Learning French or Encarta Language Learning Spanish, and then click Add/Remove.
  5. Click Automatic, and then click Next.
  6. Click Finish.
To reinstall the Encarta Language Learning program, insert the Installation & Resources CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions on the screen to reinstall the program.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
