  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q271431

SYMPTOMS

When you change the display name for a public folder by using the Exchange System Manager, the new folder name is not displayed in Exchange 2000 address lists.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not use the Exchange System Manager to change the display name of the public folder. Make all directory updates in the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server.

MORE INFORMATION

In Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, administrators are able to create public folders from the Exchange System Manager and users are able to create public folders from a client computer.

By default, all public folders are mail-enabled and are hidden from Exchange 2000 address lists. Microsoft Outlook users can only send mail to the public folder if they know the name of the folder. To view the public folder in the address lists, click to clear the Hide from Exchange Address Lists check box under the Exchange Advanced tab of the public folder properties. You can also change the simple display name on this tab. The simple display name is the name that Outlook users see when they search the address lists. Although the changes to the simple display name are reflected in the Exchange System Manager, these changes are not displayed in the address lists. The public folder display name can only be changed from the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in.

In the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, you can view Exchange 2000 system objects by enabling the Advanced Features option. To do this, start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, and then click Advanced Features on the View menu. The Microsoft Exchange System Objects container is displayed. In this container, you are able to view public folders objects that are in Active Directory.

In the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, you cannot configure the same public folder attributes that you can configure in Exchange System Manager, but you are able to change the folder display name. The modified folder display name is displayed in the address list that Outlook users see, but the modified folder name is not displayed in Exchange System Manager as the simple display name.
