The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q271407

SUMMARY

A cluster needs the default path of the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) log files to be set to a shared disk, instead of the local system drive.

MORE INFORMATION

To view the default log file directory settings:
  1. Start Exchange System Manager; click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Exchange, and then click System Manager.
  2. Click to expand Administration Groups, click to expand the administrative group name, click to expand Servers, and then click the cluster server name.
  3. Click to expand Protocols, click to expand SMTP, and then click the default SMTP virtual server.
  4. Right-click the default SMTP virtual server, and then click Properties in the shortcut menu. Enable logging by clicking to select the Enable logging check box, and then click Properties.
  5. View the path in the Log file directory box; notice that the path points to a folder on the local system drive.
For effective logging, the path needs to place the folder on a shared disk.

By default, the system drive is set as the location for the SMTP logging (for example, C:\Winnt\System32\Logfiles). To properly enable logging on a cluster, an administrator needs to specify a folder on a shared disk.
