Dialing Rules Are Not Followed When the Fax Wizard Is Used (271382)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server SP1
This article was previously published under Q271382 SYMPTOMS
When you type a fax number into the Fax Wizard, the number is not displayed with the dialing rules. However, when Microsoft Fax Service places the call, dialing rules are used when the fax number is dialed.
In addition, when you enter a number into the Fax Wizard using the Address Book, the number is dialed as a local area fax number. In this situation the dialing rules are not followed.
CAUSE
The first issue is expected; dialing rules are followed only when the fax number is dialed.
The second issue is also expected; the Address Book does not distinguish between the 7-digit number and the area code. Therefore, the number looks like a local fax number to the Fax Wizard and it is treated as a local fax number when Fax Service dials the fax number.
RESOLUTION
To resolve the second issue, when you specify a phone number for the FAX service, you can either specify exactly what you want dialed or you can specify the destination in canonical format, in which case the phone number goes through normal translation based on your telephony location.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
