"HIDSERV" Error Message After Hibernation with IBM Rapid Access III Keyboard (271376)

SYMPTOMS

When you are using an IBM Rapid Access III keyboard, you may receive the following error message when you resume your computer from a hibernation state:
Hidserv has caused an error in kernel32.dll
Hidserv will now close

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer
After this occurs, the shortcut buttons at the top of the keyboard do not function.

CAUSE

The HID server is not correctly recognizing the Rapid Access III keyboard when the computer returns from a hibernation state.

RESOLUTION

Windows Millennium Edition

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to computers that are experiencing this specific problem.

To resolve this problem, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the fix. The earlier version of the fix was discovered to have additional problems on versions of Windows Millennium Edition (Me) that use a double-byte character set (DCBS). These versions include Japanese and Chinese. The newer version of the fix addresses these additional problems and replaces the original version. If you have applied the earlier version of the fix on non-DCBS versions of Windows Me, you do not need to apply the newer version of the fix (although you can if you want to).
