Visio2000: Issues Installing Visio on Drives Cloned with Norton Ghost (271312)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Visio 2000 on a drive that has been cloned by using Norton Ghost, you may experience the following symptoms:
  • On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 2000, the computer may stop responding early in the installation process before asking for a serial number. The system usually stops responding at the Welcome screen, with the Next button not available (dimmed). Other symptoms include that you cannot see .msi files while browsing the Visio CD and that you cannot see the Accept/Decline button on the screen.

    NOTE: If you copy the Install folder to your hard disk, the .msi files will appear.
  • On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, the installation may not restart after updating your system files. SPCore.msi reports a fatal error and will not load.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, perform a Network Installation of Visio by following these steps:
  1. After the system restarts, cancel the installation.
  2. Open Windows Explorer to the Visio CD. Browse to <cd>:\Install\bin\Sp\SPCore and double-click spcore.msi. This will install Microsoft Visual Studio Service Pack 3. Follow the instructions on screen.
  3. Open Windows Explorer to the Visio CD. Browse to <cd>:\Install\bin\Sp\VBA and double-click vba6.msi. This will install Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications. Follow the instructions on screen.
  4. Click Start, and then click Run.
  5. Click Browse, point to the Setup.exe in the Install folder, and then click Open.

    NOTE: The location for Setup.exe is <cd>:\Install\Setup.exe. Do not use the Setup.exe file located in the root on the CD-ROM.
  6. In the Run dialog box, move the insertion point to the end of the Open box. The path displayed in the Open box should be similar to step 5, except that the path is enclosed in quotation marks.
  7. To the right of the closing quotation mark, type a space, type /n, and then click OK.
  8. Follow the instructions on screen to complete the installation.
  9. Create a Visio program shortcut on the Windows Start menu by following these steps:
    1. Right-click Start, and then click Open.
    2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Shortcut.
    3. Follow the steps in the Create Shortcut Wizard to create a new shortcut to the Visio32.exe program file installed on your system.

      NOTE: The default install location for Microsoft Visio is C:\Program Files\Visio
