The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q271194

SYMPTOMS

When you open the Display Properties dialog box, either through Control Panel or by right-clicking the Microsoft Windows desktop and clicking Properties, the Web tab may be missing.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the DeskHtmlExt registry key is damaged or missing.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, reinstall Windows on top of your existing installation. To do so, type a command line in the Run dialog box (on the Start menu), and use switches to rebuild your system files without affecting hardware settings and schemes.

MORE INFORMATION

The DeskHtmlExt registry key controls the existence of the Web tab, and it can be found in the following location:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Controls Folder\Display\shellex\PropertySheetHandlers\

The DeskHtmlExt key contains a "(Default)" value, which points to a class registry key and a Tag value, which is a number unique to a particular computer.

If you copy the DeskHtmlExt folder from another computer, this does not restore the Web tab.
