Cannot Remove an Encoder Instance in the Remote Administration Sample (271172)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7
- Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1
- Microsoft Internet Information Server 4.0
- Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0
This article was previously published under Q271172 We strongly recommend that all users upgrade to Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) version 6.0 running on Microsoft Windows Server 2003. IIS 6.0 significantly increases Web infrastructure security. For more information about IIS security-related topics, visit the following Microsoft Web site: SYMPTOMS
When you connect to an encoding computer, you may not be able to remove an instance of the Windows Media Encoder through the Remote Administration sample. The Remote Administration sample allows you to control Encoder instances on the target computer that were created previously. You can also add and remove new instances of the Encoder. When you try to remove an instance, you may receive the following error message:
Encoder Encoder_Name was not created using RemoteAdmin so cannot be destroyed
CAUSE
This error message most likely occurs for one of the following reasons:
- The Encoder was not created by the Remote Administration sample. It was either created through a user at the console, or by another automation interface. For this reason, the Remote Administration sample cannot be removed.
- The Encoder was created by the Remote Administration sample, but since the time it was created, the session state was lost. This can be caused by closing the browser or going to another Web page. This can also be caused by a timeout on the Web server. Because the session state was lost, the Remote Administration sample does not have a handle to the Encoder anymore, and therefore cannot remove it.
WORKAROUND
The Remote Administration sample cannot remove an Encoder instance that was created by a user at the console, or through another automation interface.
If you want to remove an Encoding session created by the Remote Administration sample, but are unable to because of the session state, try using the following steps: - When you are finished, stop the Encoder process.
- Close all browser instances that reference the Encoder that you want to remove.
- Wait for IIS to clear out its cache (by default, 15 minutes). At this time, the instance of the Encoder will automatically disappear.
MORE INFORMATION
Do not use Task Manager (Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000) or Program Manager (Windows 98 and Windows ME) to end the Encoder Task. This can lock the capture device and prevent it from being used again until the system is restarted.
