Works 2001: Cannot Synchronize Windows CE Device by Using ActiveSync (271165)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to synchronize Works 2001 with your Microsoft Windows CE-based device, you may receive the following message on your Windows CE device:
An incompatible version of Microsoft ActiveSync software has been detected. Synchronization has been disabled. Upgrade ActiveSync on your desktop computer and reconnect.
In the Options dialog box, there are no programs installed.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the wrong version of ActiveSync is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the correct version of ActiveSync.

Works 2001 synchronizes correctly to a Windows CE device if the following requirements are met:
  • Windows CE 2.0 or later device with ActiveSync 3.0 or later.
  • Windows CE 3.0 (Pocket PC) device with ActiveSync 3.1.
