BUG: Windows Media Format SDK 7 Redistribution Setup Fails When Username Contains Non-7-bit ASCII Characters (271082)

SYMPTOMS

Windows Media Format SDK version 7 redistribution Setup (WMFDist.exe or WMFADist.exe) fails if the name of the user who is logged onto the computer contains non-7-bit ASCII characters. If the user is logged on with an account name that does not contain any non-ASCII characters, then Setup succeeds.

CAUSE

If you install the WMFDist.exe or WMFADist.exe package that is embedded inside an Internet Express package while you are logged on under a username that includes non-7-bit ASCII characters, installation will fail.

RESOLUTION

There are two ways to work around this problem:
  • Change the TMP variable to a local directory name containing standard 7-bit ASCII characters. -or-

  • Use the /T parameter for installing the redistribution package:

    WMFDist.exe /T:C:\SomeTempPath

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in Windows Media Format SDK version 7.
