Unwanted Archive Content May Appear in Final Content (270901)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1

This article was previously published under Q270901

SYMPTOMS

Sometimes when you are creating content by using the archiving option, there may be short bits of unwanted content in the resultant WMV file. This unwanted content is bits of audio / video from a different Source Group.

CAUSE

When you are configuring Source Groups and outputting to a file, you have the option of setting the archive state (Record, Pause, or Stop). If you conduct a Source Group switch between a group set for Record, and a group set for Pause or Stop, then you might see content in your output file from the group to which you switched.

This behavior is caused by a limitation in the ASF v1 standard. The standard requires that audio / video payloads are written in the same ASF packet. Because the timestamps between the payloads can very by up to three seconds, some residual from the other source group may be seen.

WORKAROUND

At this time, there are no workarounds for this issue. The problem only occurs intermittently, and its probability increases when Source Groups are changed back and forth very quickly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Encoder version 7.0.
