Black Boxes Appear When You Use ASF or WMV Files Created with VFW Codecs (270890)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1

This article was previously published under Q270890

SYMPTOMS

When you use a WMV or ASF file as the source content for the Windows Media Encoder, source files that were created with a Video for Windows (VFW) codec such as Video1 or Cinepak may result in content that contains black boxes in the video. WMV and ASF files that were created by the VidToASF program may also experience similar results.

RESOLUTION

Instead of using the WMV or ASF file as the source, use the original AVI as the source.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Media Encoder version 7.0.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem does not occur with the Windows Media Encoder version 4.1. If you do not have the original AVI content, this may be a potential workaround.
