Instant Messaging Disaster Recovery

1. Use Exchange System Manager on another computer to delete the Instant Messaging virtual server object from the affected computer:
   1. Use the following path to locate the Instant Messaging (RVP) object:

      Administrative Groups\Administrative Group Name\Servers\Downed Server Name\Protocols

   2. Right-click the Instant Messaging virtual servers listed.
   3. Click Delete.
2. Delete the Instant Messaging Virtual Server Wizard.
   
   If another home server is available:
   
   
   1. Check Move Users.
   2. Click a target home server from list of those available.
   3. Click Delete.
   If no home server is available, click Delete.
   
   Repeat steps b and c until no Instant Messaging virtual servers are listed.
   
   Note If multiple global catalog servers exist in the site, these servers must replicate this change of Instant Messaging user attributes before you delete the Instant Messaging server. Otherwise, one global catalog server may not be synchronized. If you delete the Instant Messaging server you may disable the Instant Messaging users instead of moving them to another server.
3. Re-install Windows 2000 Server (or Advanced Server).
4. Perform disaster recovery:
   1. Insert the Exchange 2000 CD in the drive.
   2. Click Start, and then click Run.
   3. Browse to Setup.exe on the Exchange 2000 CD.
   4. Run Setup.exe with the /disasterrecovery switch.
   5. After the disaster recovery portion has finished, use Internet Services Manager to create any previously defined Web sites.
   6. Re-create the Instant Messaging home virtual server. See the Help topic for details.
5. Move or enable users:
   1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
   2. Select the users that will populate a new virtual server.
   3. If a router exists in the organization:
      1. Right-click in the display pane.
      2. Click Exchange Tasks.
      3. Click Change Instant Messaging Home Server.
      4. Click the new home server.
      5. Finish the wizard.
   4. If a router does not exist in the organization:
      1. Right-click in the display pane.
      2. Click Exchange Tasks.
      3. Click Disable Instant Messaging.
      4. Finish the wizard.
      5. Right-click in the display pane.
      6. Click Exchange Tasks.
      7. Click Enable Instant Messaging.
      8. Finish the wizard.
