The Playlist Is Not Updated when a File Is Moved (270837)

SYMPTOMS

When you move media files from one location to another, the file name and file path remain unchanged in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 and 7.1 "All" playlists and any other playlists that contain the file. The file itself responds to the Play command, but the content does not play.

When you attempt to play the moved file from the playlist, you may receive the following error message:
The System cannot find the file specified.
Or, after moving a media file which is part of a playlist to a new location, the file may be skipped during playback of the playlist.

On the Tools menu, if you click Search the computer for media, all drives are scanned; however, the playlists are not updated.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you can use one of the two following methods:

First, delete the old file from all playlists or the library; then follow either Method 1 or Method 2.

Method 1

Click the Search button and find the file. The file is displayed in a Search Results playlist with paths to both the old and new locations. Drag the correct file to the appropriate playlist.

Method 2

Play the file from its current location by double-clicking on it. A new entry is created in the All Files playlist. Drag the new file to the appropriate playlist.

NOTE: For the preceding example, there should only be one actual music file, preferably located in the My Music folder.
