WD2000: NUMPAGES Field Is Not Updated When You Open Document (270835)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Word 2000

This article was previously published under Q270835

SYMPTOMS

When you open a multiple-page document that contains the NUMPAGES field in the header or footer, the field may appear incorrect, regardless of the total number of pages in the document. For example, the PAGE and NUMPAGES fields may appear as follows:

NOTE: The NUMPAGES field displays the total number of pages in the document.

NOTE: If the Field codes option (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Print tab) is selected, the field codes in the document are printed, instead of the page number. For example, a field similar to the following may be printed, instead of the page number:

Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}

NOTE: If the page numbers appear as a field in your Word document, turn the field codes off. To do this, click Options on the Tools menu. On the View tab, click to clear the Field codes check box.

CAUSE

This is a problem only when you first open the Word document. After the document is paginated, the NUMPAGES field is updated to the correct total number of pages.

WORKAROUND

To paginate your Microsoft Word document and correct the NUMPAGES field, do one of the following:
  • On the File menu, click Print Preview.

    -or-
  • Press PAGE DOWN to advance to a different page, and then press PAGE UP to return to the first page of your Word document.

    -or-
  • Press CTRL+END and then press CTRL+HOME.

    -or-
  • On the File menu, click Print. After your document is printed, the NUMPAGES field appears correctly.
NOTE: After you use this workaround, the problem may recur after you close and reopen your Word document.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Word 2002.
