Not Prompted for Novell Logon ID When Connecting to Novell Network with CSNW (270628)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect to a Novell network by using Microsoft Client Services for NetWare (CSNW), Windows 2000 does not prompt you for your Novell logon ID if the Windows and Novell logon IDs are different. Therefore, the Novell authentication does not succeed.

The following symptoms are also related to this issue:
  • Logon scripts are processed for only the initial logon process. Connecting after logging on does not cause the logon scripts to be processed; users may not receive their drive mappings. Users may be unaware of the difference between a mapped drive and physical drive, and may not be able to find their data without these mappings. Static drive mappings are not an option in this case because they interfere with the ability to dynamically change drive mappings if a server should stop working.
  • Connecting to the Novell network after logging on requires "walking" the NetWare Directory Services (NDS) tree to find a resource (volumes only) to attach as a user. This process can add 5 to 20 minutes to the logon process for each user.
  • Printers are not connected until a "Connect as" is performed on a volume resource in the NDS tree. Clicking a printer resource does not prompt for a "Connect as" ID.

CAUSE

You cannot use the same naming convention in NDS and Active Directory because the period is treated as a delimiter in NDS.

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.
