The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel X for Mac
  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q270091

SYMPTOMS

When you apply Currency or Accounting formatting to cells, Microsoft Excel inserts the default currency symbol (for example, the dollar sign). However, if you first apply one of the following formats
  • Date
  • Time
  • Fraction
  • Special - Zip Code
  • Special - Zip Code + 4
  • Special - Phone Number
  • Special - Social Security Number
and then apply the Currency format to the same cells, the default currency sign is not applied. The data in the cells is displayed with two decimal places and no currency sign.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually select the dollar sign (or whichever currency sign you want) on the Number tab in the Format Cells dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
