Works 6: Paste Link Option Appears to Be Available if You Paste Special a .Wk1 File (269997)

SYMPTOMS

Open a Lotus 1-2-3 spreadsheet in Microsoft Works Spreadsheet, and then copy some of the cells that contain data. If you you use the Paste Special command on the Edit menu to paste the cells into a Microsoft Works Database document in Form View, the Paste Link option may appear to be available.

If you click Paste Link and then click OK, you may receive the following message:

The object is linked to the document C:\My
Documents\Test.wk1#SSLink0, which cannot be found. Locate
the document that contains the object, then reestablish the
link.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if there is no spreadsheet program for the data to link to because neither Microsoft Excel nor Lotus 1-2-3 is running. The Paste Link option is not supposed to be available and only rarely appears.

The Works Database cannot paste-link Lotus 1-2-3 data to a Works Spreadsheet object. The Database can paste-link Lotus 1-2-3 data only to Excel or Lotus 1-2-3.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, do not attempt to paste-link data from a .wk1 file; Works does not have that capability.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
