Works 6: Error 1309 When You Install Works 6 or Works Suite 2001 (269983)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Works 6 or Microsoft Works Suite 2001, you may receive the following error message:
Setup: Error 1309, error reading from file: path wkgdcache.exe.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 Update is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, manually run the Mdac_typ.exe file, and then install Works 6 or Works Suite 2001.

To manually run Mdac_typ.exe, follow these steps:

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Insert the Works 6 or the Works 2001 CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.

    Use default steps for Windows 95/98 for Consumer programs.
  3. In the Named box, type mdac_typ.exe.
  4. In the Look in box, click the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive that contains the Works CD-ROM.
  5. Click Find Now.
  6. In the list of found files, double-click the Mdac_typ.exe file.
  7. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the MDAC 2.5 Update.
  8. When you are prompted to restart the computer, do so. After you install the MDAC 2.5 Update, install Works 6 or Works Suite 2001.
