Works: Error Message When You Open a WordPerfect Document (269977)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a WordPerfect (.wpd) document in Microsoft Works Word Processor, you may receive the following error message:
Works cannot open filename. The file may be in use by another application, the file format may not be supported by any of the installed converters, or the file may be corrupt.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the WordPerfect document contains graphics.

When you click OK, the document opens, but the graphics in the document do not appear as expected.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Save the document as a Rich Text Format (.rtf) file in WordPerfect.
  2. Start Works Word Processor.
  3. On the File menu, click Open.
  4. In the Open dialog box, click Rich Text Format (*.rtf) in the Files of type box.
  5. Locate and select the document that you saved in step 1, and then click Open.

    The graphics in the document appear as expected.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
