Works 6: Attempt to Insert Symbol Results in Empty Square (269976)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 6

This article was previously published under Q269976

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to insert a symbol into a Microsoft Works 6 Word Processor document, the symbol does not appear, and it is replaced with an empty square.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions are true:
  • You are using the Microsoft Windows 95 operating system.
  • You click 75% in the Zoom box on the standard toolbar.
  • You use Symbol font version 1.6.

NOTE: Version 1.6 is the most recent version of the Symbol font.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use a Zoom setting other than 75%.

To resolve this issue, replace Symbol font version 1.6 with Symbol font version 1.5 or earlier.

If there is no easy source for you to obtain version 1.5 or earlier of the Symbol font (such as a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer), you can reinstall Windows 95, and the font is replaced with the version that originally came with your operating system.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Works 6.
