WD2001: After Upgrade to Word 2001, the Earliest Version Normal Template Is Unexpectedly Loaded (269948)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q269948 SYMPTOMS
When you upgrade to Microsoft Word 2001, your customizations from Word 98, including new toolbars and new menus, may not appear as expected.
This behavior may occur if your computer initially had an earlier version of Word (such as Word 6.0) installed, which was upgraded to Word 98 and then upgraded again to Word 2001. Word loads the Normal template from the earliest version of Word.
CAUSE
The behavior can occur because when Word 2001 is installed, the program finds and loads the Normal template that was used by the earliest version of Word, and then finds the Normal template that was used by Word 98. Word does not overwrite the first Normal template with the second Normal template, and so the earliest version remains as the Normal template for Word 2001.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.
Use the Organizer to Copy Styles, AutoText Entries, Toolbars, or Macros- On the Tools menu, click Templates and Add-Ins.
- Click Organizer, and then click the tab for the items that you want to copy.
- To copy items to or from a different template or file, click Close File to close the active document and its attached template or to close the Normal template. Then click Open File to open the Word 98 Normal template (or whatever file that you want).
NOTE: The Word 98 Normal template can be found in the Templates folder, inside the Microsoft Office 98 folder. - Click the items that you want to copy in either list, and then click Copy.
To select a range of items, hold down SHIFT and click the first and last items. To select nonadjacent items, hold down CTRL as you click each item.NOTE: If you copy toolbars to which you have assigned custom macros, you must also copy the macros.
Copy the Word 98 Normal Template to the Word 2001 Templates Folder- Install Word 2001; start Word 2001 for the first time, and then quit the program.
- Move the Normal template file out of the Microsoft Office 2001 Templates folder.
- Copy the Normal template file from the Microsoft Office 98 Templates folder to the Microsoft Office 2001 Templates folder.
- Start Word 2001.
The correct Normal template should now load, and all of your customizations, including new toolbars and new menus, should appear.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Word 2001 Macintosh Edition.
