OFF2001: Error Message: Microsoft Clipboard Library Could Not Be Loaded (269894)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q269894

SYMPTOMS

When you click Office Clipboard on the View menu, you receive the following error message:
The Microsoft Clipboard Library could not be loaded. Please run the installer application to restore any missing files.

CAUSE

This error message appears if the Microsoft Clipboard Library is missing or was removed from the active System folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the First Run Install feature to reinstall the Microsoft Clipboard Library. To start the First Run Install feature, follow these steps:
  1. Quit all programs.
  2. Open the Extensions folder, which is in the System folder, located on your computer's hard disk.
  3. Locate these five extensions, and then drag them to the Trash:

    Microsoft Component Library
    Microsoft Internet Library
    Microsoft OLE Automation
    Microsoft OLE Library
    Microsoft Structured Storage

  4. Close all folders, and then start one of the Office 2001 programs.

Doing this automatically starts the First Run Install feature, because of the missing extensions. This installation inserts a new copy of the missing files.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

First Run Install Process

The First Run Install process is started the first time that you start an Office program after you perform a drag-and-drop installation of Office. Under normal conditions, the First Run Install process is not restarted.

The First Run Install process is automatically started when you start a Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition program if any of the following files are not present in the Extensions folder within the Systems folder:

Microsoft Component Library
Microsoft OLE Automation
Microsoft OLE Library
Microsoft Structured Storage

The First Run Install process checks for the existence of these files in the System folder. Files that are missing from the System folder are copied to the correct location.

NOTE: The First Run Install process replaces existing files only if the existing files are earlier versions.
