OFF2001: Setting the Desktop As the Default Document or Narration Location (269890)

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to set the Desktop folder as the default location for Microsoft Word documents or Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show narrations, you may be unable to select it.

RESOLUTION

While pressing the SHIFT key, click the selected folder or drive on the desktop to unselect it. In this way, the Desktop folder becomes the default folder.

WORKAROUND

To select the Desktop folder as the default folder for Microsoft Office documents, follow these steps:

In Microsoft Word

  1. Start Word and open a new blank document.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Preferences.
  3. Click the File Location tab.
  4. Under File types, click Documents, and then click Modify.
  5. When you view the list of drives and folders on the desktop, the top one is selected by default. Press and hold the SHIFT key, and then click the selected item in the list to unselect it. Click Choose.

    Notice that the location for documents is now the Desktop folder.

In Microsoft PowerPoint

  1. Start Microsoft PowerPoint and open a new blank document.
  2. On the Slide Show menu, click Record Narration.
  3. In the Record Narration dialog box, click Select.
  4. In the Choose a Folder dialog box, when you view the list of drives and folders on the desktop, the top one is selected by default. Press and hold the SHIFT key, and then click the selected item in the list to unselect it. Click Choose.

    Notice that the location to link narrations in is now the Desktop folder.
