OFF2001: No Warning That Preview Is Disabled When Password Protection Is Enabled (269888)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac
- Microsoft Word 2001 for Macintosh
This article was previously published under Q269888 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Word 2001 or Microsoft Excel 2001, when you password-protect a file that has the Save preview picture check box selected, the Save preview picture check box is automatically cleared without any warning (alert).
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Office 2001 for Mac. MORE INFORMATION
In Microsoft Word 2001 or Microsoft Excel 2001, if you click Open on the File menu, and then click Show Preview, you can browse through your files and preview the contents of many files before opening them.
However, when you password-protect a file, Office automatically clears the Save preview picture check box so that when you browse through your files, you can not preview the contents of protected files before opening them (which requires a password).
When you click a protected file, the preview pane is dimmed and contains the text "Preview not available." If you then double-click the protected file, you are prompted for a password before you can open the file.
