Services for UNIX Stops Responding with More Than 16 Group IDs (269785)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows NT Services for UNIX Add-On Pack

This article was previously published under Q269785

SYMPTOMS

The Mapping service in Services for UNIX may generate an Access Violation error message, and this may cause your computer to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This problem can occur whenever a UNIX user has more than 16 group IDs. The Mapping service has a hard-coded limit of 16 group IDs for each user. If the Mapping service interacts with a user who has more than 16 group IDs, the service may stop responding when it tries to use memory for the group ID that is beyond the first 16. This occurs because memory is not allocated for any group ID that is beyond the first 16.
