Works Suite: You cannot install Word during Works Suite Setup (269729)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Works Suite 2001, the Setup program may stop running when the Microsoft Word 2000 installation starts.

You may receive a message that prompts you to insert your original Word CD-ROM. When you insert the CD-ROM, the installation tries to start and then stops again.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if Word 2000 was installed as a stand-alone product (not part of Microsoft Office or Works Suite 2000), and you are using a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, remove Word 2000 before you try to install Works Suite.

To remove Word 2000, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click Microsoft Word 2000, and then click Remove.
  4. When the Are you sure... prompt appears, click Yes.
  5. Follow the instructions to complete removing Word 2000.
If you cannot remove the previously installed Word 2000, then download, install and run the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility to remove Word and then continue with the installation of the Works Suite. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Try to remove Word 2000 as directed earlier, but if that fails, download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (Msicuu.exe) described in the following article:

  2. Install the Clean Up Utility by running the Msicu file, and then follow the instructions to install the program.
  3. Click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Installer Cleanup.
  4. Click Microsoft Word 2000, and then click Remove.
  5. After Word has been removed, close the Windows Installer Cleanup utility.
  6. Start the installation of Word from the Works Suite setup.
